The Erna B. Rosenfeld Scholarship in Jewish Studies was created to honor the memory of Professor Alvin Rosenfeld’s wife of fifty years, Erna Rosenfeld, and to encourage serious study of the manifestations, character, and consequences of anti-Jewish hostility, especially in the post-Holocaust period. Erna worked for IU for over 35 years, receiving the Outstanding Professional Staff Merit award for her work as the Area Coordinator for IU Residence Life.

Erna was born in Romania in 1939, and knew first-hand some of the horrors and displacement of World War II. Perhaps for that reason, she became an unusually caring, generous-hearted person and did a great deal for countless numbers of people in need, including thousands of IU international student families. The scholarships are made possible by generous donations from Alvin Rosenfeld, Dr. Myron and Myrna Weinberger, and many others.

IU graduate students may apply via Grants-in-Aid of Jewish Studies Research (Deadline: February 18). To be considered for an Erna B. Rosenfeld Scholarship, a graduate student must be pursuing research/study of antisemitism during the academic year of funding. Preference will be given to Jewish Studies Ph.D. minor and master’s degree students.

The proposal must include:

• A request to be considered for the Erna B. Rosenfeld Scholarship.
• Amount of funds requested and for which semester(s) - [Summer, Fall, Spring, or academic year]. Continuing M.A. students requesting program support for a subsequent year need not include a budget unless they are also requesting research-related expenses.
• Explanation of research/study of antisemitism project (2-3 paragraphs) and indication of its role in degree progress, such as dissertation research, participation in scholarly conferences or workshops on antisemitism, language acquisition, etc. (1 paragraph).
• If applicable, a budget that may include airfare, transportation to airport, lodging, photocopies at archives - with total costs noted; and one letter of reference from a Jewish Studies faculty member that speaks to the student’s project.
• Proposals should be submitted as an MS Word document emailed to iujsp@iu.edu by February 18.
