Borns Jewish Studies Program

This course is offered in a hybrid model as a flipped class, with in-person sessions and asynchronous online sessions. This course is the third semester course in Modern Hebrew, and assumes prior Hebrew background. To develop and advance their Hebrew skills, students use Hebrew for communication at the low-intermediate acquisition level. The course is based on topics covered in the first year courses of the program. 

In this course, students learn to communicate about the past. They discuss their own history, their families’ history, and certain aspects of the history of the Jews and of Israel. As such, this course introduces Israeli media and students work on short excerpts from the Israeli media, to learn more about cultural aspects in Israel and about the make-up of Israeli society. Following the first year courses, where basic sentence structures are mastered, this course introduces more complex sentence structures, and new aspects of Hebrew grammar such as the construct state. The course provides a solid review of present tense and infinites, and introduces the past tense forms in Modern Hebrew. In addition, this course offers a comprehensive look into the use of prepositions. 

This course uses writing, reading, speaking and listening assignments to develop skills. Students conduct conversations with each other and with the instructor. They write short essays and perform short presentations. They also use audio and video recordings. The use of technology allows students to hone their language skills at their own individual pace.

P: Grade of C or higher in JSTU-H 150 or equivalent proficiency
